Abstract

The article examines the connection between pilgrimage and religious tourism, asserting that religious tourism, as a cultural phenomenon, originated from pilgrimage. The primary objective of this study is to explore the transformation of pilgrimage and its social function over time, in response to cultural and societal changes. To achieve this, the authors analyze representations of pilgrimage in literature and film. This investigation enables the authors to distinguish the characteristics of pilgrimage and religious tourism, as well as to address questions concerning the current social roles played by these concepts in contemporary society.

Keywords: pilgrimage, religious tourism, cultural phenomenon, Christian cinema, sacred objects, social communications.
