Abstract
This study examined how the selected memes depict the state of the Nigerian economy using multimodal critical discourse analysis. The acquired data were examined using Kress and Van Leeuwen’s (2006) multimodal discourse analysis and Van Dijk’s (2015) critical discourse analysis. The analysis revealed that the attitudes and policies of the government affect the economy. The visual images are presented mainly in narrative, demand, offer images, and informational values. At the representational level, the study revealed that the citizens are mostly affected by Nigeria’s economic status. They have negative reactions to the Nigerian inflation’s state and share their thoughts using satirical and ironic elements via memes to show their grievances. The interactive level revealed how the relationship between the government and the people affects the economy. Leaders’ formal and high social status makes it difficult to associate with the lower class. The compositional level revealed colours to have connotative meanings.
