We welcome Elena Semenova to the editorial team and look forward to ongoing collaboration in arts and theory. We also welcome Julieta Salinas to help with administration, and thank her and Ivan Capeller for help with translations. Hopefully links to South America can grow.
Themed or general papers for Issue 12 can be submitted. Bi lingual papers including an English version are accepted and encouraged.

Papers in Issue 11 well address the goals of the journal since it commenced in 2013. Post colonial and geopolitical change resonate with themes of the IASS Congress held in Buenos Aires this year. The role of semiotics to contribute to theatrical, literary and visual arts commentary is demonstrated – after all, this arts provide a plethora of representation for convenient study of sign systems. The phenomenon of emergent social practices, especially under stimulus of new media, is addressed, bringing into perspective the seminal writings of Bakhtin. Themes of social conflict are introduced – peace is a theme that we hope to address in future issues. Finally, there is an excellent inquiry in applied semiotics – a testimony to the quality of general papers submitted to the journal.
“A Major Phenomenon in Space Contestation among Yoruba Religious Groups of Southwestern Nigeria” by Oladosu Olusegun Adebolu, Makinde Abdul Fatai Kola and Odewale Victor Taiwo and “Coming out of Culture” by Eduardo Chávez Herrera demonstrate our focus on the geopolitical South. Semiotics is more than an abstract methodology – it is embedded in understanding of social change emerging in post-colonial regions. This theme is very relevant following the Buenos Aires Congress held in September this year. Three papers – “Visualizing Theatrical and Novelistic Discourse with Bakhtin” by Susan Petrilli, “Carnival in the Absence of the Actor” by Elena A. Semenova and “Gesture in Actor Training: Embodied Partial Narratives” by Janys Hayes – locate semiotics as a commentary of performance and literary works, whose job it is to represent, interpret and mould social and cultural realities Petrilli and Semenova continue a scholarly and dynamic conversation about contemporary relevance of Bakhtin, which, along with “The Dancing Cop: Semiotics and Innovation by Massimo Leone, reach to the emergent dynamics of micro social phenomena. This is a second main theme of our journal. Adebolu (et al.) foreshadow a rich theme of war and peace. How does semiotics responds to conditions of human conflict and equilibrium, indeed how much as theory is semiotic shaped by such conditions? “Rhetoric and Ideology in Communication Today” by Augusto Ponzio continues cross disciplinary inquiry into power, politics and language – which is inevitably present in different manifestations in all social spheres. Finally Paul Ryder (“A Cultural and Literary Reconsideration of the Motorcar in Modernity”) offers an elegant creative paper that displays how applied semiotics can provide flexible and elegant inter-disciplinarity. It demonstrates the kind of quality, general papers in applied semiotics that are always welcome by Southern Semiotic Review.

A Major Phenomenon in Space Contestation among Yoruba Religious Groups of
Southwestern Nigeria, de Oladosu Olusegun Adebolu, Makinde Abdul Fatai Kola e Odewale Victor
Taiwo e Coming out of Culture, de Eduardo Chávez Herrera, demonstram nosso interesse pelo Sul
Três artigos – Gesture in Actor Training: Embodied Partial Narratives, de Janys Hayes, Visualizing
Theatrical and Novelistic Discourse with Bakhtin, de Susan Petrilli e Carnival in the Absence of the
constituída a partir desta mesma condição? Rhetoric and Ideology in Communication Today, por
sociedade. Finalmente, Paul Ryle (A Cultural and Literary Reconsideration of the Motorcar in
Semiotic Review.
